The public is invited to attend today's debate involving Alexandria mayoral candidates. The debate is set for 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. today in the Coughlin-Saunders Performing Arts Center on Third Street in downtown Alexandria.
The even will be televised live on KALB-TV Channel 5, which is sponsoring the event. It is called "Meet the Candidates -- A Mayoral Forum."
The doors open to the public at 4:30 p.m. Admission is free. All candidates have committed to attend.
The event's format will be strictly controlled.
If time permits, audience questions screened beforehand will be read to candidates by veteran broadcaster Bob Madison and Channel 5 news director Michele Godard.
Babs Zimmerman, longtime Channel 5 newswoman, will be the moderator.
Brewer's list of contributors shows a who's who of Alexandria: doctors, lawyers, businesses -- many of whom contributed $1,000 to the maximum $2,500 such as Dr. Paul Davis Jr., engineering firm Meyer Meyer LaCroix & Hixon, Blake Chatelain, Douglas Ashe, Roy Martin, Noles-Frye Realty and the law firm of Provosty Sadler DeLaunay Fiorenza & Sobel.
The document also shows that, as of Aug. 21, the Brewer camp had spent $76,162.
"The money is still coming in," Brewer said. "Most of the people who have contributed are businesspeople confident I can do the job."
Six of seven candidates for mayor of Alexandria weighed in Monday on how young city professionals and their families would benefit if they were elected mayor.
More than 100 visitors packed Hearn Stage at the Kress Theatre downtown to hear Delores Brewer, Joe Fuller, Alice Hammond, Roosevelt Johnson, Jacques Roy and Dr. John Sams give their visions of an Alexandria future with them at the helm. Charles F. Smith Jr. did not attend.
