LA Fluoridation Mandate Bill Back in the Senate
New York – June 14 – Passed by the Senate, amended by the House, SB 312, the fluoridation mandate bill is back in the Louisiana Senate for another go-round which, if enacted, will require health-robbing fluoride chemicals be added to most of Louisiana’s public water supplies ostensibly to reduce tooth decay.
Over 1200 messages opposing fluoridation flooded legislators’ mailboxes asking them to reject SB-312. Only 50 messages of support were received, according to an action message on the Louisiana Dental Association’s (LDA) web site. The LDA created the bill.
"Serious scientific research has revealed numerous dangers and potential dangers from the ingestion of fluoride. Those include bone cancer, increased bone fractures, lead poisoning, brain damage and dental fluorosis...If this bill is passed, encourage our fine governor to veto it," writes Peacock.
“The Louisiana Dental Association misinformed legislators about fluoride's safety,” says attorney Paul Beeber, President, New York State Coalition Opposed to Fluoridation, Inc.
For example, their online letter to legislators says, "more than six decades of research, literally thousands of studies and the experience of more than 170 million Americans tell us that fluoridation is safe, effective and economical in preventing tooth decay."
However, the most recent review of fluoride toxicology is from the prestigious National Research Council (NRC). In 2006, the NRC revealed that fluoride, even at low levels added for fluoridation, is detrimental to the thyroid, diabetics, kidney patients, high water drinkers and others.
As a result of the NRC report, both the American Dental Association and the Centers for Disease Control now advise against mixing infant formula with fluoridated water.
Also as a result of the NRC report, the National Kidney Foundation withdrew its fluoridation endorsement to, instead, advise kidney patients (not just those on dialysis) to learn about fluoride’s adverse effects and that a malfunctioning kidney causes the body to retain bone-damaging fluoride levels. Yet, the Louisiana Dental Association erroneously lists the National Kidney Foundation as a supporter of fluoridation.
Dentist Hardy Limeback, PhD co-author of the NRC reports says, “Kidney patients have never been included in bone studies. Fluoride is harmful to them. It contributes to osteodystrophy. Reducing fluoride in the water even down to levels of water fluoridation will still not protect the entire population and it is the moral duty of the EPA to work with the CDC to find the lowest, safest level of fluoride in the drinking water.”
“Louisianan’s should contact their Senate representatives to stop the money-wasting fluoridation mandate at http://tinyurl.com/3s4fmc , says Beeber
With American Dental Association funding, the Louisiana Dental Association (LDA) hired public relations and lobbying firms to promote fluoridation, according to the Journal of the Louisiana Dental Association (Winter 2007).
“Most
Over 1,700 professionals urge Congress to stop water fluoridation and conduct hearings, citing the new scientific evidence that fluoridation is ineffective and has serious health risks. See statement: http://www.fluorideaction.org/statement.august.2007.html
