last of the summer wine

a hummingbird guards its feeder in early october 2011, rapides parish, la.

some say that you're supposed to remove your hummingbird feeder around labor day, that doing so helps to encourage the hummingbirds to migrate.

others say to leave feeders out through fall, that the birds are born programmed to migrate and nothing can change that.

since the latter makes the most sense to us, we leave ours out through fall, till frost or until we're sure that the regulars are gone and all the migrating stragglers have passed through.

in any event, they'll all be gone soon; taking with them a certain summertime excitement ... until they're return -- in mid march to late april.
