UPDATE 10:55 pm cdt friday 01 may 2009:

Friesan Fire ranks as 9-2 choice in advance Derby wagering
====
Louisiana Derby (G2) romper FRIESAN FIRE (A.P. Indy), who started off as the 5-1 fourth choice on the morning line, has been bet down to 9-2 favoritism for Saturday's Kentucky Derby (G1), as of 7 p.m. (EDT) on Friday.

Coming next in the early-bird wagering is Blue Grass S. (G1) victor GENERAL QUARTERS (Sky Mesa) at 5-1, plummeting from his 20-1 morning-line price.

Wood Memorial S. (G1) star I WANT REVENGE (Stephen Got Even), who was tabbed as the 3-1 morning line favorite, has drifted up to 6-1. UPDATE SCRATCHED

Florida Derby (G1) runner-up DUNKIRK (Unbridled's Song) has likewise seen his odds go up to 8-1.

CHOCOLATE CANDY (Candy Ride [Arg]) is the only other runner in single digits, trading at 9-1, while PIONEEROF THE NILE (Empire Maker) has risen to 10-1.

I Want Revenge commands the lowest paying Oaks/Derby double ($1) with Rachel Alexandra (Medaglia d'Oro), yielding a return of $6.10. The Rachel Alexandra/Friesan Fire double will pay $7.10.

The Oaks/Derby double payoffs ($1) and early odds for the Kentucky Derby contenders are listed below. ~ read more

Eight Belles was the first filly since 1999 to run in the Derby; the last to win was Winning Colors in 1988. She didn't press 2-1 favorite Big Brown down the stretch, and he drew away to a 4 3/4-length victory. Still, Eight Belles was a sentimental pick by 157,770 fans, second- largest crowd in Derby history. She repaid their support by returning $10.60 and $6.40 for a $2 win ticket. ~ source

we were pulling for the #7 horse pants on fire. on 26 march 2011, it won the louisiana derby [vid]. also a nice angle to that story would have been its female jockey anna napravnik. they finished ninth.

during the race call it seems that nbc sports didnt have the announcers sound volume turned up high enough over the track noise. we also noticed during the broadcast that nbc sports had a lot of trouble with their graphics too.

Completing the order of finish were Shackleford, Master of Hounds (Kingmambo), Santiva (Giant's Causeway), Brilliant Speed (Dynaformer), Dialed In (Mineshaft), Pants on Fire (Jump Start),

Twice the Appeal (Successful Appeal), Soldat (War Front), Stay Thirsty (Bernardini), Derby Kitten (Kitten's Joy), Decisive Moment (With Distinction), Archarcharch (Arch), Midnight Interlude (War Chant),

Twinspired (Harlan's Holiday), Watch Me Go (West Acre) and Comma to the Top.

Uncle Mo (Indian Charlie) was an early and well-publicized scratch on Friday.

Archarcharch was vanned off after the race, and his status was unknown at publication. According to analyst Gary Stevens, the saddle slipped forward on the near-black colt during the running of the race, leaving jockey Jon Court with very little control. ~ read more

barbaro's ashes to be interred at churchill downs

    By WILL GRAVES
    AP Sports Writer
    excerpt:
LOUISVILLE, Ky. (AP) -- Barbaro will be buried at the site of his greatest triumph. The 2006 Kentucky Derby champion, who was euthanized Jan. 29, 2007 from complications of a breakdown suffered at the Preakness, will have his ashes interred at Churchill Downs.

Barbaro's remains will be placed outside of an entrance gate in a large elevated space enclosed by bricks. The site will also include a bronze statue commissioned by owners Roy and Gretchen Jackson and loaned to the track as part of the official memorial site. The track will install a bronze marker at the site soon. The track plans to unveil the statue and formally dedicate the site in 2009.

Gretchen Jackson said Churchill Downs was the best place to honor the colt, who won the Derby by a dominating 6- 1/2 lengths before being injured in the Preakness two weeks later.

"(The Derby) was for us the greatest race that Barbaro ran," she said. "When we think about Barbaro, we think about him running around the track out there. We'll always have that joyous memory." ~ link

before the race we were pulling for the #7 horse "rousing sermon" -- the show horse of the 99th louisiana derby. however, after the race began we were really hoping that the #6 horse "bodemeister" would pull it off by going the distance. even so, it was a very good race.
