sullivan, was a native of holloway, louisiana and a retired longtime welding instructor at peabody magnet high school and businessman, died on 10 november 2010.

several of the businesses that sullivan -- together with his wife audette humbles sullivan are known for, include, sullivan enterprises, inc., the sullivan gun and knife show, a watkins distributorship, a cane syrup manufacturing/bottling operation, metal building fabrication and erection, as well as a truck farm.

sullivan was a veteran of the united states naval service before joining and then retiring from the united states air force.

besides his widow, audette, sullivan leaves behind three sons, rick of california, steve from the dallas texas area and cliff of alexandria, la., and many grandchildren.

services for richard j. "dickie" sullivan are tentatively set for 2:00 pm saturday, 13 november 2010 at philadelphia baptist church.

complete arraignments are expected to be announced shortly after 2:00 pm today from hixson brothers, funeral home.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Louella Sullivan & Charles “Buck” Slay; husband, Carl N. "Euddie" Gunter; sons, Elton Wayne & Carl Newton Gunter; sister, Goldie Slay; brother, Oliver R. Slay; granddaughter, Rhonda D. Gunter.

State Senator Joe McPherson announced today that based on family and business considerations, along with a need to prepare for a legislative session that begins in two weeks, he has decided to end his campaign for the Louisiana Public Service Commission.

McPherson finished only 648 votes from the lead in the April 4th primary to fill the unexpired term for the 4th District seat of the PSC. A runoff had been set for May 2nd.

“After closely examining the primary results, I was convinced that we could run a competitive campaign,” McPherson said. “However, with the realization that turnout will be exceptionally low, I concluded that in order to win an election that will take place so quickly, I would literally need to campaign full-time. With family and business commitments, as well as the rapid approach of what I believe will be one of the most important legislative sessions in our state’s history…one that will require my full attention, I simply could not do that.”

“I want to thank all of the voters and supporters who placed their faith in me,” said McPherson. “My decision to end this campaign does not end my long-time commitment to Louisiana consumers and I will continue to speak out on their behalf.”

McPherson represents the 29th State Senate district, which encompasses most of Rapides Parish. The 2009 Regular Session of the Louisiana Legislature convenes at noon on Monday, April 27th.

Jack Montoucet was firmly against these cameras. He told me point blank at a Clyde Holloway function recently that he was opposed to these cameras and would firmly vote against them given the chance. He point blank told me that night that it was a money making scam and everyone knew it. He got a ticket and was furious about it. He was more than 100% opposed to these cameras and let everyone know it. At least that was his position that night.

Then all of a sudden – he had a change of heart (over this past weekend I suppose). He’s re-thought his ticket experience and realized it’s changed his driving behavior . He is now for the cameras. And today he provided Redflex with a the much needed vote to kill HB 480. Having the swing vote is a very valuable thing.

So after the vote when people started to leave, I went up to Jack and asked him a simple question……..what did they give you for you to change your mind? He freaked – he started screaming at me in the committee room. And pointing his finger at me. Don’t you ever accuse me of……blah blah blah. I simply responded. Jack. It was just a simple question. Just what did you get?

Also, after the committee hearing Charlie Buckels ran up to me and started doing something really weird with his lips. Sort of a smooch noise. I guess he was saying “kiss my ass”. That’s the only thing I can think. Then he sarcastically asked how my little state court case was going. So I immediately asked him how many checks has he’s been writing out of the republican party check book to get support for his company Redflex. As you may or may not know, Charlie Buckels is the Vice Chairman of the Republican Party, and recently he was the state party treasurer.

The people were certainly out-numbered by the paid for lobbyist today. Jeff Arnold pointed out that not one person who spoke in opposition to his bill was a regular voter. That every single one of them had something to financially gain by these camera programs.

so, last night we were channel surfing and came to stop at...we are embarrased to admit this..faux news, but only because they were doing an interview with the aunt (fathers sister) of natalee holloway. anyway, during the course of the interview we noticed in the crawl all the "news channels" do nowadays, something about franklin graham comparing the us army 's [iraq] sacrifice to the sacrifice made by jesus?!? so this morning we held our nose's and went on fox news website but couldnt find the story. next we did a google news search on franklin graham (which is what we should have done in the first place) and found a story.

first off it was an army the ROMAN army that scourged jesus. it was an army the ROMAN army that crucifed jesus. it was soldier's ROMAN soldier's that gambled over jesus's garments. when jesus, hanging on the cross asked for water it was soldier's ROMAN soldier's that gave him vinegar to drink instead. it was another soldier a ROMAN soldier who took a spear and stabbed jesus in the side. you get the picture?

ronnie milsap: louisianians responsible for popularizing 'the freeze'

ever since we first heard it probably in the early 1980's "if you dont want me to" or the freeze has been one of our favorite songs.

the thing about this song is that it's very mysterious. we'd hear it occasionally on the radio but could never find out the name or what album of mr. milsaps' that it was on.

there is also a real snappy line dance that we would see people at parties dance when the house band would play it live.

over the years we'd search for it with no luck and no leads in music stores in virginia, north carolina, new jersey, florida are a few that come to mind.

then in the late 1980's we were in the alexandria, la. mall and went in to a popular at the time, music store they used to have there called musicland. there was a real young guy behind the counter and we went into our spiel about a song by ronnie milsap that starts out with a piano one of the lines is something like 'if you dont want me too' and there is a line dance ... he smiled and stopped us in mid sentence and said the name of the song is "if you dont want me to" or the freeze and it's not available and that they couldnt order it and that they get people in there every week if not every day looking for it. so that was that.

so skip ahead to 2000 - 2001 when we first got on the internet and napster was going strong and legal so we signed up for napster just to see if we could get that song file and indeed it was the very first file we ever downloaded from there.

despite napster being legal, we didnt feel bad about downloading the file because we had made every good faith effort we could think of to purchase it; on a side note, what was so great about napster -- besides having probably every song ever made on there -- was that it was a great resource for speeches and other historical events.

we're lucky to be able to walk and chew gum at the same time -- much less dance but we've always enjoyed watching line dancing and last night we were on youtube looking for some line dance videos and just happened to search for the freeze and came across a video which was only uploaded to youtube this past august in which mr. milsap gives some of the history behind this song. see below.

"if you dont want me to" was finally released as a track on his newest cd called "country again." so we'll be on the look-out for that cd.

the youtube commenter bobby71446 says that the man in the video lives in leesville, louisiana and that they call him pop.

wst... note: we began drafting this post tuesday (04 october 2011) morning and added to it as more information became available; so, if this post appears even more disjointed than usual that's probably why.

as brer rabbit can attest, bloggers never know what to expect to show up in our email from one day to the next.

early tuesday morning we received an email from michael barry: "email from blog - request to use 4 seconds of speckled kingsnake in our video clip" the subject line read.

he wrote that his m8's were working on the music video clip to support their single "swamp monster" and was looking to use a brief glimpse of our louisiana speckled king snake footage in it.

we have a few speckled king snake clips up and although he didnt specify by a url which one in his request, we had a good idea which clip mr. barry was on about --

with everything so far sight unseen we just assumed that they were kids in a garage band and that their single might possibly have been inspired somewhat by the history channel reality tee vee show called "swamp people," no episode of which we've ever seen but have heard of from the local media from time to time because its filmed in louisiana.

most of our clips are donated to the public domain anyway, but we could appreciate mr. barry's being careful, so we replied right away with a permission.

later we visited the bands bio page from the link in the email.

as you can see from their website they are a well established and popular band with many music videos of their original material;

the internet movie data base says that the 1st episode of "swamp people" big head bites it, didnt air until 22 august 2010.

in the meantime we found a blog post on their website with which they let their fans know that the 'swamp monster' video clip is completed but not ready for show.

not long afterwards mr. barry, (who plays harmonica and provides vocals) emailed us the unlisted youtube link to his preliminary version to check out.

the vid is in black and white and sort of reminds us of the work of director, wayne isham, particularly the music video 'wanted dead or alive' he directed in 1987 for bon jovi. wdoa was a hella music video back in the day and remains a classic.

we've kinda been interested in learning how to edit digital video since back in march when our cousin, who's coincidentally also australian, (on his mum's side) inspired us by his winning the 83rd best director oscar.

we mentioned to mr. barry that we liked his choice of black and white and he wrote back to explain that his band creates their own clips and the "[swamp monster] clip [is] based mostly on public domain old horror movies."

and that he used a "threshold filter for the B&W effect" mostly "because it gave it a modern graphic novel/pen and ink feel." and because "it felt natural to try and keep the vibe consistent."

the irony is that our speakers have been on the fritz lately so we can see the vid but cant hear it. so we had to phone up some friends and to ask them to play it to us down the phone line.

we can make out from our phone recording what sounds like solid slide and lead guitar work in a catchy riff and accompanied with a strong harmonica. it sounds great.

in answer to our question about whether 'swamp monster' was somehow inspired by the "swamp people" tee vee program, mr. barry wrote:

This was from an album we released in 2010, its just taken me a while to get the videoclip done.

Paul [read], our slide player, wrote this after borrowing some CCR and Pink Floyd albums to listen to for the weekend.

The lyrical content was my version of a Gothic Horror format: Part A, there is a monster, Part B: About the monster, Part C: I AM the monster (lol).

However...if the reality show wanted to use the song that'd be kind of interesting. I've always wanted to be a theme song :-)

so you can tell that we've had quite the fascinating, informative and entertaining couple of days.

we've gotten an authentic louisiana speckled king snake, probably, before its over with, in sight of several million australian and south pacific eyes + an open invitation that if we're ever in sydney to hang-out and party with "one of australias hardest working original roots bands." what more can any blogger ask for?
