city of alexandria, la. mayor jacques roy wikipedia entry vandalized

among other "news" in today's "city notebook" the gannett/the town talk repeater, bret h. mccormick, beneath the heading "'wiki' woes" tells how mayor roy's "online profile" [correct term: wikipedia entry] "recently was changed [correct term: vandalized] to take shots at the mayor."

click picture to enlarge====
interestingly, as of the date and time of this post, the gannett/the town talk's website is displaying a link to the city notebook but the page is not there -- the link redirects to "story not found."

anyway, mr. mccormick goes on to write how "an anonymous user, [correct term: vandal] whose ip address traced to sturgis, ky., updated [correct term: vandalized] roy's profile [correct term: wikipedia entry] around 5 a.m. jan. 8 and included derogatory comments about roy and members of his family."

naturally, we were intrigued and it made us wonder why someone in sturgis, kentucky would be interested in alexandria, louisiana goings-on.

so we navigated over to mayor roy's wikipedia entry: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jacques_Roy;

then clicked on "view history" to pull up the revision history. there are only two revisions -- read instances of vandalism -- from 8 january 2011 -- one from 4:51 am and the second minutes later at 4:55 am.

both are from the ip address: 98.67.201.113.

however, when we did a whois lookup of 98.67.201.113 it resolves to an ip location in marksville, louisiana -- not sturgis, kentucky.

a traceroute also resolves to a host located in louisiana. as far as we can tell none of the hops even go through kentucky.

according to the revision history of jacques roy, the 8 january 2011 vandalism went unnoticed until 21 january 2011.

another interesting tidbit to be gleaned from the revision history is the five "revisions" made on 12 january 2010 from ip number: 12.34.246.74.

that ip number resolves to a computer registered to state farm mutual automobile insurance company.

137th kentucky derby official results

we were pulling for the #7 horse pants on fire. on 26 march 2011, it won the louisiana derby [vid]. also a nice angle to that story would have been its female jockey anna napravnik. they finished ninth.

during the race call it seems that nbc sports didnt have the announcers sound volume turned up high enough over the track noise. we also noticed during the broadcast that nbc sports had a lot of trouble with their graphics too.

Completing the order of finish were Shackleford, Master of Hounds (Kingmambo), Santiva (Giant's Causeway), Brilliant Speed (Dynaformer), Dialed In (Mineshaft), Pants on Fire (Jump Start),

Twice the Appeal (Successful Appeal), Soldat (War Front), Stay Thirsty (Bernardini), Derby Kitten (Kitten's Joy), Decisive Moment (With Distinction), Archarcharch (Arch), Midnight Interlude (War Chant),

Twinspired (Harlan's Holiday), Watch Me Go (West Acre) and Comma to the Top.

Uncle Mo (Indian Charlie) was an early and well-publicized scratch on Friday.

Archarcharch was vanned off after the race, and his status was unknown at publication. According to analyst Gary Stevens, the saddle slipped forward on the near-black colt during the running of the race, leaving jockey Jon Court with very little control. ~ read more

barbaro's ashes to be interred at churchill downs

    By WILL GRAVES
    AP Sports Writer
    excerpt:
LOUISVILLE, Ky. (AP) -- Barbaro will be buried at the site of his greatest triumph. The 2006 Kentucky Derby champion, who was euthanized Jan. 29, 2007 from complications of a breakdown suffered at the Preakness, will have his ashes interred at Churchill Downs.

Barbaro's remains will be placed outside of an entrance gate in a large elevated space enclosed by bricks. The site will also include a bronze statue commissioned by owners Roy and Gretchen Jackson and loaned to the track as part of the official memorial site. The track will install a bronze marker at the site soon. The track plans to unveil the statue and formally dedicate the site in 2009.

Gretchen Jackson said Churchill Downs was the best place to honor the colt, who won the Derby by a dominating 6- 1/2 lengths before being injured in the Preakness two weeks later.

"(The Derby) was for us the greatest race that Barbaro ran," she said. "When we think about Barbaro, we think about him running around the track out there. We'll always have that joyous memory." ~ link

    ruffian

earlier today we followed a link via the dead pelican to the chronicle journal out of thunder bay, ontario, canada. the story here is about a new abc television movie filmed partially at louisiana downs called "ruffian".

ruffian was considered the greatest female race horse of all time. she ran eleven races and was undefeated until the eleventh. the eleventh race is when someone got the bright idea to race her against "foolish pleasure" that years (1975) kentucky derby winner. the race was billed as "the great match" a sort of a battle of the sexes.

"ruffian" airs on the abc television network at 8:00 pm central time saturday 09 june 2007.

    RUFFIAN
    17 April 1972 - 7 July 1975
    ruffian wikipedia entry
    ruffian memorial at find-a-grave
    the chronical journal snip:
"It was much harder writing about it, having to go back there emotionally was not easy," [sports writer william] Nack said in a phone interview. "There were days I had to walk away from the manuscript. I was sorry at one point I got involved in it."

That’s because Nack was clearly smitten with the black beauty called Ruffian. He was at Belmont on July 6, 1975, when the match race - offering a US$400,000 purse that was the largest to date - was shown live on CBS.

"By the time she ran in the match race, she was already a legend," Nack said. "She was the fastest female race horse that I had ever seen."

Foolish Pleasure took the early lead before Ruffian charged up on the inside and stuck her head in front. Then, suddenly and inexplicably, Ruffian shattered the sesamoid bones and ruptured the tendons and ligaments in her right front ankle.

She continued running on her injured leg, which nearly snapped in two. Bones protruded through her torn skin, allowing sand and dirt into her bloodstream.

    [...]

There’s not been another thoroughbred match race in America since Ruffian and Foolish Pleasure.

"It generated a lot of interest in the sport, but ultimately the match race was a negative because it turned a lot of people off racing for a long time," said Nack, who was so affected that he stopped covering racing regularly. He was at Pimlico when Barbaro broke down, too.

    KENNETT SQUARE, Pa.

Kentucky Derby winner Barbaro has developed a severe case of laminitis, a potentially fatal disease caused by uneven weight distribution in the limbs, and his veterinarian called his chances for survival "a long shot."

Dean Richardson, the chief surgeon who has been treating Barbaro since the colt suffered catastrophic injuries in the Preakness on May 20, said the Derby winner's chances of survival are poor.

    KALB sale advancing

we would have to say this is pretty good news -- although, we would strongly encourage the successful purchaser to bring in all new management. thats if they ever want to be taken seriously.

UPDATE 1-Media General says TV station sale in second round
    Tue Dec 4, 2007 4:48pm ET144
Adds earnings forecast, details about SP Newsprint)

NEW YORK, Dec 4 (Reuters) - U.S. newspaper and broadcast company Media General Inc (MEG.N: Quote, Profile , Research) said on Tuesday it was in the second round of bids for the five television stations it put up for sale in October.

The stations are in the southeastern United States at Jacksonville, Florida; Lexington, Kentucky; Panama City, Florida; Alexandria, Louisiana; and Toccoa, Georgia.

Media General had received good first round bids and has gone into the second round of bidding, one of the company's executives said at a UBS media conference, which was broadcast over the Internet.

The company also reiterated that its SP Newsprint division was up for sale. SP Newsprint, owned by itself, Cox Enterprises, Inc. and The McClatchy Company, said in May it hired TD Securities to explore strategic alternatives including the sale of itself and its recycling subsidiary.

SP is the second-largest producer of 100 percent recycled newsprint and the fifth-largest newsprint producer in North America, with 2006 consolidated sales of $638 million, the company said in the May release.

Media General also gave an update on its outlook for the coming year. It said it expects a much stronger year in 2008, with its broadcast division set to benefit from revenues tied to political elections and the Olympics.

The company's shares fell 5.6 percent to $22.02. (Reporting by Megan Davies, editing by Gerald E. McCormick)
