Baton Rouge (LA) Competition was keen as twelve teams competed for top honors at the 17th Annual Black History Quiz Bowl hosted by the Southern University Ag Center on Thursday, February 25.
The questions covered a variety of topics including politics, civil rights, culture, sports, and the arts.
Five high school teams and seven teams from the College of Agricultural, Family, and Consumer Sciences competed against each other.
In the end, the young scholars from Capitol High Academy took first place, followed by a second place finish by the Southern University Timbuktu Academy.
The Animal Scientists Blue Team from the Southern University College of Agricultural, Family, and Consumer Sciences finished third.
“It’s all about preparation,” expressed Dr. Owusu Bandele, a retired Southern University Ag Center Professor Emeritus, who initiated the annual quiz bowl seventeen years ago and moderates the sessions.
“The high school teams signed up early and, consequently received the study guides earlier. They took the event seriously. It was truly inspirational to see these young people perform so well,” added Bandele.
The Capitol High Academy team included John Brumfield, Sherrell Briggs, Darius Williams, and Hanifah Muhammad.
Timbuktu Academy team members included Ikechi Akujobi, Justin Brumfield, Kristopher Dandridge, and Cyla Queen.
The Animal Scientists team consisted of Isaiah Nelson, Bryan Smith, Patience Muse, and Bryan Goins.
All participants received books by or about African Americans as gifts.

while we hardly support many, if any, of city of alexandria, la. mayor jacques roy liberal programs and policies we've always felt like city attorney chuck johnson, despite what must be tremendous pressure, is a real stand-up guy in that he is loyal to the mayor and in these days, loyalty, especially in the political realm, is a hard thing to come by.

sts-133 final flight of discovery
nasa.gov excerpt:
STS-133: Final Flight of Discovery
Workhorse, ambassador, scientist and equal opportunity emissary. Space shuttle Discovery has fulfilled all those roles over the course of its 352 days in space, thus far.
It’s been the first shuttle to venture into new territory several times, and it’s about to do so again: Following the STS-133 mission, Discovery will be the first of the shuttle fleet to retire.
“We’re wrapping up the Space Shuttle Program,” said STS-133 Commander Steve Lindsey. “Besides the excitement of completing the International Space Station and all the things we do, I hope people get a sense of the history of what the shuttle is and what we’ve done and what’s ending. Because they’ll probably never see anything like it flying again.” ~ read more

silent color film of jfk at rice hotel houston 21 november 1963
roy botello filmThe Rice Hotel in Houston was the second stop of a planned five-city Texas visit that was to have finished at a fund-raiser dinner in Austin. The Kennedy assassination happened in Dallas the next day.
Shortly before 9 p.m. in the hotel's grand ballroom, President Kennedy spoke to a group of several hundred from the League of United Latin American Citizens (LULAC). He then introduced First Lady Jacqueline Kennedy who spoke, without notes, in Spanish. The room erupted in cheers of "olé."
The film was recently donated to the Museum by Roy Botello who, at the time, served as the first Scholarship Corporation Chairman of LULAC in San Antonio. He brought along his home movie camera that evening and captured silent color film of the Kennedy arrival, welcoming dignitaries, a mariachi band and both Kennedys addressing the crowd. ~ read more and watch a higher quality version

muammar gaddafi's "appalling" speech of 22 february 2011
link to video watch/download page
around 5:53 pm tripoli, libya time. col. gaddafi through state t.v. addressed the libyan people.
his speech was so bizarre such as his repeatedly referring to the libyan protesters as rats, cockroaches, drug addicts, mercenaries and so forth that press tv at around twenty-eight minutes into it chose to cut-a-way and bring in some commentators --. although they may have done so before, this is the first time that we've ever seen press tv break-a-way from any leaders speech while still in progress.
one press tv political analysis from damascus, nabeel al-samman, observes that gaddafi is at "the end of his rope now" and that the he doesnt make sense.
gaddafi brags about being a revolutionary but is suppressing a revolution. gaddafi doesnt offer any programs to resolve the problem. instead, gaddafi is pitting people against each other.
mr. al-samman says that gaddafi is complaining about the united states -- yet it was gaddafi who cooperated with the u.s. so many times. he says that gaddafi changes alliances just to stay in power.
nabeel al-samman: gaddafi is a jew! "everyone knows about it." gaddafi's mother was a jewess.
as far as drug addicts: "[gaddafi's] son was involved with an italian [jewess] actress and he was arrested in switzerland many times because he hit the policeman.
in italy, his son was involved with a jewess italian actress with drugs and he talking about the people they are on drugs -- gaddafi, this guy doesnt make sense."
jackson allers, a journalist in beirut says that if there are any foreign elements in libya sowing discord then gaddafi is the one who let them in. "if these foreign elements are in libya sowing discontent as he says, then he is the one that allowed for them to be there -- the truth of the matter is: libya has a very strong secret service and the idea that he would allow for anyone in this country to actually enact any sorts of dissent or sow the seeds of dissent with the so called drug addicts or the rodents, the dogs, as he is calling them -- absolutely appalling language to be calling your own people in these ways, i dont see the advocacy of such an argument.
yahya al-arizi, university professor, damascus, says that gaddafi is trying to intimidate people such as how his speech was full of threats. professor al-arizi points out that there are thousands of protesters in the streets and no one can expect that all those thousands are drug addicts or to be people just protesting "for the hell of it or the sake of it."
i do think that it's against the interests of the west to have this kind of violence ensue because your precious oil reserves are at stake. the free flow of oil in this case. we've seen the price of oil shoot up to over $100.00 a barrel; i dont see how that could serve their interests for example.
so i do think thats a bit of an incorrect analysis on the situation. i think a better question to ask, in this case, is, why has it come to this point that the people are in the streets protesting in a way, taking over state military structures, taking over things that are the sort of sacred institutions of the revolution. the things that gaddafi prides them on and the fact that gaddafi says that we havent used all of our power yet?
i think that hes really blowing a lot of smoke up in the air. i dont think that he really has too much to stand on and i'am really afraid for where this is going."

the united states has held secret talks with a number of senior taliban members to see if they are willing to lay down their weapons and join the peace process -- "but such informal contacts have been denied by the taliban. they say it is just washington's propaganda to cause rifts among the taliban rank-and-file." + the taliban has the upper hand and do not want to engage in peace talks.

robbie payne v brett gardner state supremes restore some sanity in rapides ambulance chasers gone wild case
Payne v Gardner Supreme Court
This litigation arises from an accident that occurred in rural Rapides Parish on March 9, 2004, when thirteen-year-old Henry Goudeau climbed onto the moving pendulum of an oil well pump and attempted to “ride” the pendulum.
As the pendulum continued its upward motion, his pants unfortunately became entangled in other parts of the pump, resulting in severe personal injuries.
Henry’s mother, Robbie Payne, subsequently filed suit against the manufacture of the pumping unit, Lufkin, among others.
In response, Lufkin filed a motion for summary judgment, asserting it was not liable for Henry’s injuries because it did not “anticipate” at the time it designed and manufactured the product in the 1950s that it would be “used” for recreational purposes–“riding”–by persons, including teenagers.
Lufkin, in support thereof, filed a Statement of Undisputed Material Facts, which stated Lufkin manufactured the pump for the sole purpose of extracting oil, and not as a ride, as well as the deposition of Jon Tarver, the coowner of the company that owned the oil pump, who testified to the same.
In opposition, Ms. Payne argued there existed a foreseeable risk children would attempt to play on the oil well pump and submitted trial court cases from California, Texas, and Oklahoma in which children had been injured while attempting to “ride” on an oil well pumping unit and the deposition testimony of Brett Gardner, regarding a fatal accident in Shreveport involving teenagers attempting to ride a pumping unit.
The District Court granted summary judgment, finding plaintiff “failed to allege any facts that the pump was unreasonably dangerous in itself and for the purpose for which it was intended,” i.e., pumping oil:At the time of the accident, the minor was thirteen years of age; he should have known not to attempt to ride the oil pump.
The standard is that of a reasonable person.
The oil well, in itself, was not unreasonably dangerous for its reasonably anticipated use; because it’s anticipated use was for pumping oil and not riding.

Facebook users are being subjected to an even greater tide of online malware and worms, such as Win32/Yimfoca.AA and Win32/Fbphotofake, claims a leading IT security researcher.
According to Marek Polesensky, a researcher with ESET, Win32/Yimfoca.AA has even ranked in his IT security firm's top ten security threats in many European countries, including Austria, Italy, the Czech Republic and Slovakia, over the last few weeks.
Polesensky reports that the Yimfoca worm uses Facebook chat to attack, while Fbphotofake is a social engineering worm which distributes itself and other malware through spam Facebook messages. ~ read more

why do secret homosexuals complain the most about ... homosexuals?
a couple of tweets that recently appeared in our twitter timeline here and here reminded us of that age old question.
not surprisingly, there is a web site "ranker" that makes lists of various things; one of their lists is "top 10 14 anti-gay activists caught being gay."
utah goings-on are of no concern to us -- especially considering that louisiana's own collection of freaks, perverts, criminals and lunatics will soon enough be convening in baton rouge (twice this year) to deprive us of even more liberty and property.
however, one of the perez hilton commenters, exbff, left a comment that we found worth reproducing here:
No way those lips haven't touched wood. Come on out precious…it's ok.
"rotund" alexandria, la. attorney susan ford fiser gets a 3rd circuit smack down
we dont know whether or not louisiana third circuit court of appeal judges, elizabeth a. pickett, sylvia r. cooks and marc t. amy saw our 08 april 2010 post where we pointed out that alexandria, la. attorney, susan ford fiser, louisiana bar roll number: 22,366, (the ford law firm, 1630 metro drive, alexandria, la.) needed to pay a lot better attention to her legal papers;
it's too bad that willard a.harp and lisa harp didnt see that post as it possibly could have saved them a bundle in unnecessary legal fees:

kalb: louisiana attorney general raids winn parish sheriff a.d. bodie little office and residence
incredible. to trigger a state investigation, this guy must be a total screw-up.
louisiana districts attorney, police -- especially the state police, attorney general, etc. traditionally cover-up for and suppress investigation and prosecution of governmental and political corruption and wrong doing.
this is why when you hear about a crooked louisiana politician being investigated -- much less prosecuted, its always being done by the feds.
on the other hand the state initiating an investigation like this could be a trick.
it could be that the state got wind of an imminent fbi raid on the winn parish sheriff and that they are actually rushing in to protect the sheriff by seizing and burying the evidence.
anyway, this is kalb's 5 and 6 pm report.

george w bush cancels visit to switzerland over fears of arrest
tip: next time do not announce your plans in advance.
President George W. Bush has canceled an event in the famously neutral country Switzerland because of expected protests to his presence there.the commenter bunky over at the hill wrote up a succinct description:
Bush was supposed to give the keynote address at a Jewish group's charity gala on Feb. 12 in Geneva.
Leftist groups had planned to protest the visit, according to news agencies. But several human rights groups had also filed criminal complaints against Bush, demanding that he be taken into custody if he stepped on Swiss soil and investigated for allegations of ordering torture.
A right-wing member of the Swiss parliament also demanded last week Bush's arrest on war crimes allegations if he came to the country, according to Reuters. ~ read more
by bunky on 02/05/2011 at 10:40
They shouldn't have warned him ahead of time.
They should have just arrested him as soon as he stepped on Swiss soil and taken him off to prison to stand trial, which is what should have happened in the U.S. Some democracy we have here huh?
America is supposed to be an example to the world of a nation that follows the 'rule of law'. What a joke.
We don't even prosecute our own criminals and other countries have to step in to do it for us!
The Obama justice department and the congress were negligent in their duties to prosecute Bush for war crimes. What a travesty of justice.
