jonesville bull-rider corbin carpenter sets the tone for the 2009 national high school finals rodeo opening
corbin carpenter is the jonesville, louisiana teen who's neck was broken in two places due to an errant bull-stomp, last july in the 2008 national high school finals rodeo.
In watching what transpired Sunday evening, I, for one, will find it hard to say any difficult situation is impossible from here on out. After watching a young man who was supposed to be paralyzed from the chest down get on a horse and ride around the rodeo grounds at McGee Park less than a year later, it just goes to show that just about anything is possible...
Carpenter's appearance set the tone for a great first night at the 2009 NHSFR. Shortly after, the pageantry that is a staple of rodeo began, with rousing renditions of "Advance Australia Fair," "O Canada" and "The Star-Spangled Banner." Each state was then introduced with their flags flown by their respective queen contestants... ~ read more
corbin's mother, teresa freeman carpenter has written a book: "spurs, chaps and faith the corbin carpenter story," as a testimony to how corbin is using his experience with god's healing power to help change the world.it's available from amazon.com and probably everywhere else books are sold.

farmington new mexico community still sending kind thoughts to injured jonesville la bull rider corbin carpenter
excerpt from a piece captioned "check your list, mr. claus" written by farmington, new mexico, the daily-times, sports writer, darren vaughan:Please be kind to Louisiana cowboy Corbin Carpenter this year and give him the chance to fulfill his dream of competing in rodeo again. He gave us all quite a scare back in July when he suffered a broken neck after falling off of a bull, but he's been a true inspiration since as he's regained his ability to walk. It'd be a gift not only to him, but to all of us, to see him get back in the arena again.

injured louisiana bull rider corbin carpenter enters a texas rehab
corbin carpenter was discharged from san juan regional medical center on 01 august 2008, the farmington, new mexico daily times reports.
excerpt:He's undergoing rehabilitation at Baylor University Medical Center in Dallas, where he's listed in good condition, according to Ashley Howland, the facility's spokeswoman.
"He's doing really good. He's moving both legs," said Carpenter's mother, Theresa, on Monday. "His left side is a little stronger, but his right side is getting better."
Carpenter broke three vertebrae in his upper spine and sustained a spinal cord injury July 25 when the bull he was riding threw him, then trampled and kicked him in the back of the head.
He underwent two surgeries at San Juan Regional to stabilize the injury and relieve pain before he was discharged to the Texas facility. Today marks his first week there.
"He's in excellent spirits, he's laughing and joking," Theresa Carpenter said. "A young lady came to visit him because she heard a cute bullrider was on the floor."
Her son is handling the situation well, she added. A team of therapists works with him for four and one-half to five hours each day.
"He's putting out 110 percent, but that doesn't surprise me, knowing Corbin," she said. "I have a peace about this. He will walk again." ~ read more

the farmington, new mexico daily times reports,
excerpt:FARMINGTON — Corbin Carpenter may leave San Juan Regional Medical Center as early as mid-week to continue his recovery at a rehabilitation center at Baylor University Hospital in Dallas.
Carpenter sustained three broken vertebrae when a bull threw him, then trampled and kicked him in the back of his head during the National
High School Finals Rodeo on July 25 in Farmington.
The 17-year-old competitor from Jonesville, La., has undergone two surgeries since his injury to stabilize his spine.
San Juan Regional Medical Center spokesman Dennis Mathis said the young cowboy was in "fair" condition Monday. ~ read more
excerpt:
The Carpenter family has been blessed by the generosity of the NHSRA family and the citizens of the three towns which comprise the Tres Rios High School Rodeo Association – Farmington, Bloomfield and Aztec, New Mexico. On Saturday, the Alberta High School Rodeo Association began a drive to assist the Carpenters with medical expenses. Ontario High School Rodeo Association soon followed and by the end of the Short Round on Saturday night, rodeo families, spectators and the three communities had donated $20,000.00 to a non-profit account in Corbin’s name.
The three towns also assured the Carpenters that they would have no expenses while remaining in Farmington. The Best Western offered complimentary rooms for the duration of the family’s stay, along with private families who offered a home and an apartment. NHSFR local sponsor Fuddruckers Restaurant has offered to cover all meals. The NHSRA Crisis Fund is also contributing toward expenses. The Carpenters also are grateful for the many kindnesses exhibited by the families of the Louisiana National Team while they, too, were in Farmington.
Meanwhile, in the town of Jonesville, an account has also been established at Catahoula Bank. The Carpenter’s insurance does not cover rehab and the rehab stay is typically six weeks, but could be longer. The hospital is working with Specialty Programs Insurors, the NHSRA policy, on costs not covered by the family’s policy. Additionally, the family is attempting to coordinate a medical flight to Dallas.
Those who wish to send cards and letters, as well as those who may wish to assist financially, are asked by the Carpenters to please use their home address. Their mail will be forwarded to them on a regular basis, just as soon as they are settled in rehab. The home address is:

jonesville, la. bull rider corbin carpenter remains hospitalized
by johnna espinoza
professional rodeo cowboys association
Louisiana high school cowboy Corbin Carpenter is recovering from a spinal injury he sustained after being thrown from a bull at the National High School Finals Rodeo July 25 in Farmington, N.M.the farmington, new mexico daily times gives an update on corbin carpenter. mr. carpenter was 'critically injured' while competing at the national high school finals rodeo, in farmington, on friday 25 july 2008 when the bucking bull he was riding kicked and stomped him unconscious.
The 17-year-old is "cowboy tough" and will handle whatever rehabilitation is ahead of him, his mom, Theresa Carpenter, said. Several communities, numerous Western organizations and countless people in the rodeo family are also pulling for him. "The outpouring of these people will forever be in our hearts," Theresa said. "We're getting e-mails from as far away as Honduras. I cant say enough about these people."
Carpenter sustained injuries to his C6 and C7 vertebrae and had back surgery the same day he was injured. Initially listed in critical condition, Carpenter was upgraded to serious condition and moved from intensive care to a hospital room on July 29. Family and friends have been at his side at Farmingtons San Juan Regional Medical Center. He was only unconscious during surgery; he vividly recalls losing his bull rope, being thrown under the bull and trampled. ~ read more
the daily times excerpt:
[carpenter] was listed in fair condition Monday.
Carpenter underwent surgery to stabilize his spine hours after the injury. Additional surgery is possible, his mother, Theresa Carpenter, said.
Whether more surgery is done will affect the date of Carpenter's release from San Juan Regional Medical Center to a rehabilitation center in Texas, she said.
"I'd be afraid, but I know what God can do, and I know what Corbin can do," she said.
Her son wants a second surgery to further stabilize his spine and relieve pressure, but a determination needs to be made first on whether to remove a blood clot from his left arm.
The Carpenter family raises beef cattle and runs several businesses in Jonesville, La., where they live on 16 acres. Corbin Carpenter began one of the businesses, a horse-breaking operation, two years ago. ~ read more

farmington new mexico daily times editor marvels at community's outpouring of support for injured cowboys
Blake Arp was competing for a national championship in bareback riding, trying to bust a bronc that was trying to bust him.
Blake held on for the required eight seconds, finishing 12th in the rankings.
But the bronc won, too.
Blake's ride ended with him taking a hard and awkward fall to the ground, slamming his head down on the San Juan County dirt in such a forceful manner that it broke his neck.
Today Blake, from Georgia, and a Louisiana cowboy Corbin Carpenter, lie recovering from serious injuries inside San Juan Regional Medical Center.
Corbin, who was thrown from a bull and then caught underneath it, had his back broken and required emergency surgery to save his life to possibly prevent him from being paralyzed. Doctors say his prognosis looks good, but he likely will remain at the hospital in Farmington for weeks.
Blake's outlook is a little better.
"Hopefully sometime this week, he'll be released to go home on a special medical flight," said his mother, Pam Arp.
It was amazing to watch Saturday night as more than $12,000 was collected to help Corbin's family during this unexpected crisis at the final event of the week-long National High School Finals Rodeo. He was injured Friday.
"What other sport would do this?" the arena announcer asked on his public address system.
A two-year college in Tucumcari offered a scholarship.
Best Western offered free rooms to the family.
Fuddruckers offered free food.
Hundreds of locals and guests donated money. One local high school kid opened his wallet and dumped everything he had into the donation bucket. A little kid gave all he had, which was $2.
My church, and I'm sure others in town, signed cards to take to the hospital and is trying to work up a meal schedule for the family.
It is Four Corners caring and hospitality at its best.
Still, as I leaned against the arena fence Saturday night and enjoyed being close enough to the action to taste the dust, hear the grunts of the rugged livestock in action and see the intensity and anxiety of the cowboys trying to make a ride, I wondered if such help would be available should another participant get hurt that last night of action.
It was the same thought I had after watching Corbin get hurt by a bull earlier on Friday.
Who wants to be the next cowboy to ride rough stock, after the ambulance just left the premises?
I was assured that two ambulances are at the rodeo at all times.
Likewise, after Blake became the second serious injury with his bronc ride Saturday night and in the shadows of Corbin's injury, I was assured that he, too, will get the help he and his family need to make it through these tough times.
"We think God was watching over him," Pam said.
She described on Tuesday how doctors placed a halo-type device around his head and neck, and how Blake is beginning therapy to heal his wounds.
"The C1 vertebra is fractured," she said. "The doctor said the C1 and C2 lined back up; the C3 was out of line, but it is back in place. If they stay lined up, he won't need surgery."
Meaning, he broke his neck, but because it's back in place and with his strength and youth, Blake may be able to recover with care and therapy.
Pam thanks God for the positive results, and sees the outpouring of care and kindness as the best medicine.
"I wanna thank God for where he is now," she said Tuesday. "They gave him a walker to use and wanted him to begin therapy, but he did so well today, they told him he no longer needs the walker!"
The first thing he wanted to do, she said, was walk to Corbin's room and meet him.
"He wanted him to know he wasn't here alone," Pam said.
"We have an extended rodeo family from around the world," she said. "We're so grateful for all the help. The community has been just great. The people here in the hospital have been just great. We love and thank everybody for what they've done."
The family hopes that if recovery continues to go well for Blake this week, they can arrange for a special medical flight home to Georgia by the end of the week.
The outpouring of support did much to lift Blake's spirits.
"Blake said, I had no idea this many people cared about me,'" a grateful mother shared.
We'll have more updates for readers on Corbin's progress, and likewise we'll keep readers posted on Blake and his efforts to go home.
The rodeo life is a tough one. It is expensive and filled with risks for the participants. Supporters, however, quickly argue that it is a great way of life in that it promotes values, hard work and many rewards for those who enjoy working with livestock and living the lifestyle of our Old West culture.
Recovery will not be easy for Corbin, nor for Blake. Both still have much work and care required before they ever get back in a saddle.
It is good to see, however, that our local community is willing to be supportive of these young men and their families while they are required to extend their stay in Farmington.
We share our prayers and best wishes with both families.
Hang tough, cowboys.
And you moms, too.

FARMINGTON — A Louisiana bull rider was critically injured Friday afternoon after being thrown from a bucking bull and stomped unconscious by the animal.
Corbin Carpenter, 17, of Jonesville, La., was thrown from his bull about 12:15 p.m. Friday while competing at the National High School Finals Rodeo.
"He appeared to have been kicked in the back of the head when he came off his bull," said rodeo doctor Chris Miller of Kansas Orthopaedic Services. "On the floor of the arena, it was apparent he had a serious spinal cord injury."
Carpenter was taken to San Juan Regional Medical Center, where he received emergency back surgery, Miller said.
Before surgery, the teen reported he could feel nurses moving his leg, a positive sign, the rodeo doctor said.
"It's very possible that he can recover full or partial functions. It's really impossible to tell at this point what the extent of any permanent injuries may be," Miller said. "We want to hope for the best but be realistically prepared for the worst." ~ read more
