a visit from lena horne
back in the day friday nights were alright. on tee vee, was sanford and son, chico and the man and finally the rockford files.
after rockford, (apparently, we didnt stay up very often for policewoman) then you knew that it was just a few hours of sleep before sunrise and the saturday morning cartoon shows. if you were lucky you could watch them until like 9:00 or 10 am before you had to go outside and do something.
anyway, lena horne passed away back in may, aged 92; while we arent certain that we saw episode # 30 of sanford and son when it originally aired on 12 january 1973, we know we've seen it many times in syndication.
when this episode aired, 'the horne' was 55 years old and as you can see in rare form.Fast-thinking Fred fools Lena Horne into visiting the Sanford home after he spins her a sob story about little lame Lamont who looks upon Lena as a second mother. ~ source the internet movie database

we guess this wouldnt be a good time to ask the pentecostals to pay to repair the levee where their parking lot is located eh?

Reverend Gerald Archie Mangun
Born: March 11, 1919
Died: June 17, 2010
Services: A graveside service will be held Wednesday, June 23rd at 10:00 a.m., with final comments and prayer by Reverends Jim Shoemake, Randy Keyes, and Jeff Hennigan. Following a brief gathering in the POA Sanctuary, a procession will depart from The Pentecostals of Alexandria at 9:30 a.m... Interment will be at Forest Lawn Memorial Park, Ball, Louisiana.
Visitation: Visitation will be Tuesday, June 22nd from Noon-6:00 p.m. in the Main Sanctuary of The Pentecostals of Alexandria. The memorial service will begin at 6:00 p.m. that evening. Among the officiants will be the following ministers: John Alley, David Bernard (UPCI General Superintendent), Bruce Howell (UPCI Foreign Missions Director), Kevin Cox (UPCI District Superintendent of Louisiana), Kenneth Phillips (Austin, Texas), Terry Shock, and T. F. Tenney.
Reverend Gerald Archie Mangun passed from this life on Thursday, June 17, 2010, in Alexandria, Louisiana. Born on March 11, 1919 in LaPaz, Indiana, he was 91 years of age.
He is preceded in death by his parents (Walter Mangun and Bertha Birk Mangun) and four of his six siblings: (Woodrow Riddle, Mildred (Mangun) Shock, Gladys (Mangun) Starkweather, Grace (Mangun) Coleman).
He is survived by his wife, Vesta Layne (Gibson) Mangun and only son, G. Anthony Mangun (wife, Mickey Mangun). He will be missed by his two grandchildren, Miquell (Mangun) Hennigan (husband, Jeffrey Hennigan) and Gentry Mangun, as well as two great grandchildren: Eva Mykayle Hennigan and Gibson David Hennigan. His two remaining sisters, Dr. Ruth Holland (Columbus, Indiana) and Martha Spencer (Plainwell, Michigan) also mourn his passing.
After graduating from Lincoln High School in Plymouth, Indiana, in 1938, G. A. Mangun attended Apostolic Bible Institute in St. Paul, Minnesota. He was ordained as a minister in 1942. (He received an Honorary Doctorate from A.B.I. in 1986.) On September 10, 1943 he married Vesta Layne Gibson. For just a little over seven years, this couple traveled extensively across the United States sharing the Gospel message. Their only son, Anthony, was born in January of 1950.
In June of 1950, G. A. Mangun was elected Pastor of the First United Pentecostal Church in Alexandria, Louisiana (now known as The Pentecostals of Alexandria). At the time, the small church building at 16th and Day Streets was the church home to a congregation of 38 adult members. Today, the church campus on Rapides Avenue includes a Family Life Center, the G. A. Mangun Center auditorium and education building, and a main sanctuary seating 3,000.
From July 25, 1950, the day the Mangun’s moved to Alexandria, until the day of his passing, G. A. Mangun was a man committed to prayer and the furtherance of the Gospel - in Alexandria, in Louisiana, in the United States, in the world. His love and commitment had no bounds. A few years ago, teaching a class of young men aspiring to ministry, he said, “At 85 years of age I still spend no less than two to four hours a day in prayer - still pursuing a greater degree of intimacy with Jesus Christ. Everything about me springs from a single source, from one aim: ‘to preach Jesus Christ and His gospel to the uttermost parts of the earth and to influence yet another generation for Jesus Christ.’”
Over the course of his lifetime in Alexandria, he served as Chaplain for the Louisiana State Police (Troop E), the Rapides Parish Sheriff’s Department, and the Civil Air Patrol. He is a long-standing member of the Rapides Parish Airport Authority and the Alexandria Port Authority. He also served as a member of the St. Francis Cabrini Hospital’s Advisory Board. He was a respected member of the clergy in Central Louisiana and was frequently called upon to participate in building dedications and other official city and community events. He officiated at the first burial in Alexandria Memorial Gardens.
From 1951-2007, he served as the Presbyter over United Pentecostal Churches in the Louisiana District’s Section 7, comprised of approximately 35 churches in the Central Louisiana parishes. As Presbyter, he served as a member of the District Board of the Louisiana District United Pentecostal Church. He became the longest tenured District Board member in any District in United Pentecostal Church history, a record still unbroken. Following his retirement, he was named as an Honorary Member of that Board.
While leading his local church, and serving on various committees and on the Board of the Louisiana District, Bishop Mangun also served the United Pentecostal Church International as a member of the Foreign Missions Board from 1982 until the present. In 1986-87, he served a single term as an Executive Presbyter of the UPCI General Board.
Commemorating Bishop Mangun’s 70th birthday, then City of Alexandria Mayor Ned Randolph declared March 11, 1989 “G. A. Mangun Day” in Central Louisiana. In 2002, the Louisiana National Guard presented G. A. Mangun with a Civilian Service Medal for his service to our community and nation. In September 2004, he was inducted into the United Pentecostal Church International’s “Order of the Faith,” – a prestigious award of the UPCI honoring Bishop Mangun “for outstanding achievement and exemplary service.” Through the years he received other awards, honors, commendations and citations too numerous to name here.
During the brief time of his illness, the church’s website and the Gerald Archie Mangun FaceBook page, have been inundated with expressions of love and care, and testimonies from countless individuals whose lives were touched by G. A. Mangun. He was greatly loved and will be greatly missed by his church family and anyone who was privileged to know him.
Visitation will be Tuesday, June 22nd from Noon-6:00 p.m. in the Main Sanctuary of The Pentecostals of Alexandria. F. Tenney.
Pallbearers will be: Larry Clark, Wesley Garrett, Jeffrey Hennigan, Bruce LeBlanc, Anthony Mangun, Gentry Mangun, Gary Maxwell, Donald McKellar, Paul Nordstrom, and Terry Shock. Honorary pallbearers will be members of the Louisiana District Board and the Foreign Missions Board of the United Pentecostal Church International.
A graveside service will be held Wednesday, June 23rd at 10:00 a.m., with final comments and prayer by Reverends Jim Shoemake, Randy Keyes, and Jeffrey Hennigan. Following a brief gathering in the POA Sanctuary, a procession will depart from The Pentecostals of Alexandria at 9:30 a.m.. Interment will be at Forest Lawn Memorial Park, Pineville, Louisiana.
In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to The Pentecostals of Alexandria (PO Box 8838 - Alexandria, LA 71306) and will be designated for the Cuba Mission/G. A. Mangun Memorial Bible School. On-line condolences can be expressed at www.thepentecostals.org or www.hixsonbrothers.com.

May 28, 2010 -- Updated 1858 GMT (0258 HKT)
(CNN) -- Former child star Gary Coleman, who rose to fame as the wisecracking youngster Arnold Jackson on the TV sitcom "Diff'rent Strokes" but grew up to grapple with a troubled adulthood, has died. He was 42.
Coleman died of a brain hemorrhage at a Provo, Utah hospital, Friday afternoon, according to a hospital spokeswoman. The actor fell ill at his Santaquin, Utah, home Wednesday evening and was rushed by ambulance to a hospital, Coleman's spokesman had said in a statement earlier Friday. ~ read more
utah media and entertainment websites are reporting that former child actor/ "diff'rent strokes" star gary coleman is hospitalized in a salt lake city hospital where he has slipped into a coma and is on life support.mr. coleman's manager, joe alcantar, said that he needs "your thoughts and prayers for gary to make a speedy and full recovery."
Coleman, 42, suffered the injury in his Utah home on Wednesday and was taken to a local hospital for treatment, manager John Alcantar said in a statement Friday.
Coleman was then transferred to the ICU at Utah Valley Regional Medical Center for further tests and treatment.
And there, things took a bad turn.
"As of mid-morning on May 27, Mr. Coleman was conscious and lucid," said Alcantar. "By early afternoon, Mr. Coleman was slipping in and out of consciousness and his condition worsened.
"We are saddened to announce that since mid-afternoon, Mountain Time, on May 27, 2010, Mr. Coleman has been unconscious and on life support." ~ Read more
nevertheless, gary coleman or "arnold" was the star of the show. one line probably from this episode that we remember mr. coleman delivering to a social worker who had come to interview the boys, she asked "arnold" didnt he miss being around black kids his own age? to which he replied "when i wanna see a black kid my age i just looks in the mirror." we still get a chuckle and pray that he recovers.

r.i.p. dixie carter
like a lot of people back in the day we didnt mind sitting through a "designing women" episode from time-to-time. if memory serves it aired on monday nights from cbs right after "newhart." newhart is another show that we always found entertaining.
somewhere along the way "murphy brown" was added to the cbs lineup that night and since it co-starred pineville, la., native faith ford we always tried to watch when we could.
our favorite dw character was julia sugarbaker played by ms. carter. our second favorite character was anthony bouvier played by meshach taylor. bouvier's tales of his "unfortunate incarceration" and his cell mate "t. tommy reed" were always a hoot.
we also liked dw because they had one of our favorite writers, lewis grizzard, on a couple of times to play one of julia and suzanne's crazy southern relatives.
as you can imagine julia sugarbaker was our fave due to the exquisiteness in ms. carter's delivery of her very well written lines when giving someone a much deserved dressing down.
a blog called popwatch on the entertainment weekly website assembled five video clips of what the blogger tim stack believes to be ms. carter's "five best 'designing women' moments."

"buddy" tudor dies
apparently, right now there is a harvest going on.
check out that crazy obituary here or .pdf [34 kb]. why is mr. tudor's family trying to hard to convince us that he was such a fantastic person?
the likely truth is that mr. tudor was the scion of, then patriarch to, one of the old time cenla crime families who made enormous profits off of the misery of others. oh and fat government contracts. is that what former governor edwin edwards was alluding to when he referred to central louisiana as "tudorville?" article link or .pdf [16 kb]
mr. tudor was also a supporter of piyush "bobby" jindal so how great of a person could he possibly have been?

brace godfrey dies
(Baton Rouge, LA) 100 Black Men of Metro Baton Rouge, Ltd. mourns the death of its founding president Brace B. Godfrey, Jr. Family members said he died of a massive heart attack this morning. Godfrey was 58 years old.
“Brace’s untimely death is shocking and has thrown the “The100” and the community into a tailspin,” said current chapter president Dr. Adell Brown, Jr.
Brown noted that Godfrey was active on the local and the national levels with 100 Black Men, having served as a member of the executive committee of 100 Black Men of America.
As chair of the National African-American History Challenge Contest, Brace was just beginning to work with the youth leaders of the 116 chapters around the country to coordinate this event in June.
In February 1993, Godfrey called together a group of professional African American men in Baton Rouge and presented to them the concept of organizing a Baton Rouge chapter of 100 Black Men of America.
That group voted to seek affiliation and on May 5, 1993, 100 Black Men of Metropolitan Baton Rouge, Ltd. was accepted by the 100 Black Men of America as its 34th chapter in the United States.
Brace B. Godfrey, Jr. served as founding president and immediately became a member of the national board of directors. “Brace’s death leaves a void in the community, the Baton Rouge chapter of the “100” and 100 Black Men of America” said Rev. Larry Smith, a founding member and former president who succeeded Godfrey.
As founding president, Godfrey’s contributions to the “100” and the community have been well documented. He was the guiding force behind many neighborhood clean-up projects initiated by “the 100”, including the “takedown” of abandoned housing in North Baton Rouge.
It was Godfrey that developed the “Not from this House” program that addressed gun violence in the city and urged the chapter to undertake this initiative.
Godfrey was instrumental in the decision to apply to the State of Louisiana for the charter to operate Capitol High Academies and served on the board of the Capitol High Academies. He dedicated his life to serving the youth of this city and the nation.
The 100 Black Men of Metropolitan Baton Rouge, Ltd. (“The 100”) is a local organization that was formally chartered June 14, 1993, as the 34th chapter of the 100 Black Men of America.
Brace B. Godfrey, Jr. served as founding president and a member of the national board of directors. “The 100” is a non-profit organization through which African-American males step forward and assume roles of community leadership, responsibility and guidance.
The mission is to give substance to a shared vision which fosters and develops model programs that build our community by mentoring our youth.

eustace mullins dies
via rense.com
Legendary author of scores of books and pamphlets demolishing the lies of warmaking mainstream media, historian Eustace Mullins died Tuesday, Feb. 2, at the home of his caretaker in a small town in Texas.
"He was absolutely BRILLIANT in his research, writing and verbal presentations, and as honest a man and scholar as our country has ever produced. In all the interviews I had the great honor of doing with Eustace, he never ceased to amaze me...and to teach all of us critically-important truths about our world and the evil, satanic group that is and has been dominating it for far too long. HIs knowledge and wisdom about the controllers was simply astonishing." said Jeff Rense.
Mullins, who would have been 87 in March, suffered a stroke three weeks ago in Columbus, Ohio. He had been on an extended tour of his admirers for much of the past year, visiting and chatting with many of his thousands of fans who jumped at the chance to buy his books from him in person.
The author of such incendiary books as "Secrets of the Federal Reserve, "Murder by Injection, and "The Curse of Canaan, Mullins was harrassed by the FBI for almost a half century, and had one of his books burned in Germany in the 1950s. These stories are recounted in one of his books, "A Writ for Martyrs.
A protege of the imprisoned patriotic poet Ezra Pound, Mullins compiled a well-researched raft of works that detailed the passage down through time of a hereditary group of banker killers who have essentially ruled the world from behind the scenes since ancient times.
"Eustace Mullins was the greatest political historian of the 20th century, and not just because he was not beholden to the power structure that deters candid reports about significant events, but because, guided by the greatest poet of the 20th century who was imprisoned for broadcasting for peace, his meticulous research eventually uncovered virtually every significant political secret of the last 400 years. "It, is a pity so many people are afraid to believe what Mullins told them, because it was much more of the truth than has ever been seen in our schools or our media.
Funeral arrangements and appropriate memorial information have yet to be released.
