we were pulling for the #7 horse pants on fire. on 26 march 2011, it won the louisiana derby [vid]. also a nice angle to that story would have been its female jockey anna napravnik. they finished ninth.
during the race call it seems that nbc sports didnt have the announcers sound volume turned up high enough over the track noise. we also noticed during the broadcast that nbc sports had a lot of trouble with their graphics too.
Completing the order of finish were Shackleford, Master of Hounds (Kingmambo), Santiva (Giant's Causeway), Brilliant Speed (Dynaformer), Dialed In (Mineshaft), Pants on Fire (Jump Start),
Twice the Appeal (Successful Appeal), Soldat (War Front), Stay Thirsty (Bernardini), Derby Kitten (Kitten's Joy), Decisive Moment (With Distinction), Archarcharch (Arch), Midnight Interlude (War Chant),
Twinspired (Harlan's Holiday), Watch Me Go (West Acre) and Comma to the Top.
Uncle Mo (Indian Charlie) was an early and well-publicized scratch on Friday.
Archarcharch was vanned off after the race, and his status was unknown at publication. According to analyst Gary Stevens, the saddle slipped forward on the near-black colt during the running of the race, leaving jockey Jon Court with very little control. ~ read more

anyway, mr. mccormick goes on to write how "an anonymous user, [correct term: vandal] whose ip address traced to sturgis, ky., updated [correct term: vandalized] roy's profile [correct term: wikipedia entry] around 5 a.m. jan. 8 and included derogatory comments about roy and members of his family."
naturally, we were intrigued and it made us wonder why someone in sturgis, kentucky would be interested in alexandria, louisiana goings-on.
so we navigated over to mayor roy's wikipedia entry: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jacques_Roy;
then clicked on "view history" to pull up the revision history. there are only two revisions -- read instances of vandalism -- from 8 january 2011 -- one from 4:51 am and the second minutes later at 4:55 am.
both are from the ip address: 98.67.201.113.
however, when we did a whois lookup of 98.67.201.113 it resolves to an ip location in marksville, louisiana -- not sturgis, kentucky.
a traceroute also resolves to a host located in louisiana. as far as we can tell none of the hops even go through kentucky.
according to the revision history of jacques roy, the 8 january 2011 vandalism went unnoticed until 21 january 2011.
another interesting tidbit to be gleaned from the revision history is the five "revisions" made on 12 january 2010 from ip number: 12.34.246.74.
that ip number resolves to a computer registered to state farm mutual automobile insurance company.

ELMONT — You’ve got to be kidding me.
The New York Racing Association has laid a dinosaur egg on this one. The staple song for the Belmont Stakes, Frank Sinatra’s “New York, New York” has been sacked. Instead of having old Blue Eyes belting out those famous lyrics when the horses come out of the tunnel for the Belmont, we have this:
The song by rapper Jay-Z, “Empire State of Mind.” The song that will be out there will be the version by Alicia Keys, (it will be sung by teen recording artist Jasmine Villegas) which isn’t that bad but it’s not Frank at the Belmont. I will boycott it, turn on my new iPod and listen to Springsteen.
Whoever made this bonehead decision at NYRA should have to sing a duet with selected legislators from the state at next year’s Belmont. This is a stupid idea. Frank, if he were alive, would be apalled, I bet.
“New York, New York” is a staple at the Belmont, has been since 1997 when it replaced “Sidewalks of New York.” If I was a horse, I would turn around and go back into the paddock when this new song is sung.
Maybe next year, this NYRA genius can get a new song for the Kentucky Derby. Sure! Get rid of “My Old Kentucky Home.”

The question posed in Zugsberger’s case is one of "first impression" in Louisiana, his attorney Jerri Smitko of Houma wrote in a memorandum to Judge LeBlanc. The term "first impression" means that a case asks a legal question that a state’s courts have not previously ruled upon.the story leaves a lot of unanswered questions like how did mr. zugsberger come to be arrested in the first place? also is mr. zugsberger some kind of medicinal marijuana activist? the houma paper mentioned that he has pulled a similar stunt in king county, washington. according to the houma paper mr. zugsberger won that case.
Possession. It is unlawful for any person knowingly or intentionally to possess a controlled dangerous substance classified in Schedule I unless such substance was obtained directly, or pursuant to a valid prescription or order, from a practitioner...then it sends you over to R.S. 40:978 dealing with prescriptions law. neither 40:966 or 40:978 say that a prescription must be issued by a louisiana doctor.
